Why Most “PDF Blackout” Tools Are Dangerous
Many popular “PDF redaction” tools simply draw a black rectangle on top of text without removing the underlying data. The text remains in the file — fully selectable, searchable, and copy-pasteable. Remove the overlay in any PDF editor and the sensitive information is instantly exposed.
Annotation Overlays
Tools that draw a black shape over text leave the original text object intact in the PDF stream. The "redaction" is purely cosmetic.

Pixel-Level Burn
pdf.js renders every page to a 300 DPI canvas. Redaction boxes are filled directly on the canvas pixels — the underlying data is overwritten and cannot be recovered from the image.
Selective Text Preservation
We extract all text items and their bounding boxes. Items that overlap your redaction zones are discarded. Safe items are re-injected as an invisible text layer, keeping Ctrl+F search working.
Clean PDF Output
pdf-lib assembles a new PDF with the high-quality JPEG background and the filtered text layer. Metadata is scrubbed. The output contains no trace of the redacted content.
